Frequently asked questions

Are these contract templates free to use?

Yes. You can copy or download any template and adapt it. They are general drafting aids, so have the final version reviewed by an advocate for your facts and state.

Do contracts in India need stamp paper?

Most agreements are chargeable to stamp duty under the stamp law of the state where they are signed. An unstamped agreement is not void, but it cannot be used as evidence until duty and penalty are paid. E-stamp paper is available online in many states.

Which contracts cannot be signed electronically in India?

The First Schedule to the Information Technology Act, 2000 excludes negotiable instruments other than cheques, powers of attorney, trusts, wills and contracts for the sale or conveyance of immovable property. Most commercial and employment contracts can be e-signed.

When does a contract need to be registered?

Under the Registration Act, 1908, documents such as leases of immovable property for more than a year must be registered. Some states also require registration of leave and licence agreements of any length.

This template is a general drafting aid, not legal advice. Stamp duty, registration and enforceability depend on your state and facts — have the final document reviewed by a qualified advocate before you sign it. CaseDocker accepts no liability for its use.
